By the roadside of Pechichal, sitting on a stem, there is a poet meditating. For each verse he is composing, he marks a line on the ground: ten lines to the North, ten to the South, ten to the East and ten to the West, until he succeeds in obtaining the decime he is searching.
The poet is Manuel Rendón Solórzano, and this scene is a postcard of his work in time:
A wise man was counting one million
seven times a day
and in eight months he could not
count one sole of my decimes.
This decime lack of writing skills of the 19th century was wandering through all the ways praising the agricultural labor, the customs of the people and the passions of women and men of his time. This poetical inheritance has come to our days thanks to relatives who transcribed his voice.
The introductory study challenges the erudite vision concerning works like those of Rendón Solórzano, that have been formulated starting from folclore and from oral tradition. The conception of the world and working with the language deserve that this man of Manabí may be considered as the poetical voice of what was happening in his time and in his geography. The essay revives one hundred and sixty decimes, which try to be read in form of montuvian literature in the field of oral literature, avoiding the folclorical box where there are sleeping so many popular poets.
